ALPACAS

Alpacas were first shown at the Northumberland County Show in 2005 when the entry of 44 alpacas drew huge crowds all day. In 2011, our 7th year of alpaca classes, the entry is limited only by the size of the marquee and the 100 alpacas expected are guaranteed to create the same interest from the public. This endearing animal, which carries the fleece known as the “Fibre of the Gods” in Inca times and reserved for royal use, is at its most impressive at the show being fully coated just before clipping. Alpaca fibre (fleece) comes in 22 natural shades from true jet black, through browns and fawns into white and beautiful greys. Accordingly alpaca classes are divided by age and colour, with each section putting forward a Champion to compete for the Supreme Champion title. In a ‘verbal reasoning’ the Judge explains the decisions he/she has made to the public and other breeders. There is also the opportunity to talk to the exhibitors and ask questions whether you are a prospective owner or just interested in alpacas.
